Real Unreality

I have yet to see the film “Yesterday” about a singer-songwriter by the name of Jack who gets in an accident during a global blackout.  When he wakes up, things become a little strange when he plays tunes by “The Beatles” that no one seems to have heard before.  When he googles the group, all he gets is a beetle insect and Jack ends up a musical phenom playing Beatles cover songs.  That’s about all I really know about the movie, but I brought it up to serve as a background to what, I believe, would be another interesting alternate reality.  It would be sooooo cooooool if there were another global blackout and I got into an accident and became another Jack.  I would wake up and everything would look normal and folks would be acting like regular folks going about their business like they didn’t have a care in the world.  There’s my spousal unit watching a news program and I ask her if they have reported the latest Covid numbers.  She looks at me and says, Covid?  I said yeah, you know, what Trump calls fake news.  Who?

Whoa!!!  I pinch myself to see if I am on the same ethereal plane as my sweetie and I can feel it.  I immediately backtrack, just in case it’s her and not me who is abusing the reality clause in our marriage vows.  I then ask her what she is watching and she replies that CNN is reporting on Biden’s 2nd term Cabinet of which there are no changes.  I take another shot at this and ask her what happened to Trump and again I get a, who?  Now I am really beginning to get these tingly sensations on my nerve endings.  I turn my computer on and punch in the word Trump.  What I get in return are the exploits of real estate magnate Donald Trump and his reality TV series called “The Apprentice” that he starred in prior to his unsuccessful run as the Republican Presidential Candidate in the 2016 Election.  Okay, let me try this one more time as I’m going for broke now.  I turn back to my wife and ask her what happened to Donald Trump and his presidency?  She replies, “What do you mean presidency?  He blew it!  Ran his campaign by trying to be completely self-contained, refusing to take any advice and kept tweeting all the wrong things out there where the public could read.  He was completely demolished, so much so that he disappeared for quite some time.  He didn’t take losing very well.  Okay, okay, I say, so how did Biden end up being President?  What happened to Hillary?  I get this Man from Mars look and she exclaims, same thing that happened to Trump.  Social media was her downfall, what with all those emails.  Whew!  All this was a bit too much to absorb.  Time for a mental break, so I grab my mask out of my pocket, put it on and go out for a walk.  I stroll past the library and am surprised that it is actually open and not doing Covid curb service.  I walk in and am taken aback that no one has a mask on and off to the side are a half dozen kids sitting just inches apart.  They appear to be a little apprehensive when they see me with a mask on.  One of them yells over something about the Chinese Flu being eradicated for some time now.  I go sit at a computer and log in to do some research.  I become completely boondoggled when I find out that the quick actions of the Obama Administration’s Pandemic Defense Plan that pushed back the Ebola Virus after 4 cases and 1 death in the United States was intensified and became a CDC combatant for any future breakouts.  President Biden’s 1st term was dedicated to a clearing of the air campaign in battling the effects of global warming and viral pandemics and was such an astounding success that he won re-election in a total landslide.  Rumor has it that no Republican wanted to run.  Trump was approached, but he already had his 15 minutes of fame.  His loser title was too much to overcome and he remains below the radar.  All of a sudden, it hit me.  This IS our reality, not the alternate one of quarantines, cancellations, closures, stimulus checks, Trumpism and Covid clutter.  Stay tuned…..!

Uncommon Failure

Okay, I’ll let you all be the judge and jury of the following statement that I came across that was buried in the dark corners of the internet where I usually find my strange and highly unusual articles of confoundation.  This is a Los Angeles Times letter to the editor ( https://www.latimes.com/opinion/story/2021-04-12/huntington-beach-ku-klux-klan ) about the “burb” of Huntington Beach.  Headline: “Common ground with the Ku Klux Klan?  Huntington Beach has a problem.”  The letter starts off with, “As Huntington Beach was preparing for a Ku Klux Klan rally and, in response, a Black Lives Matter counter protest, police department spokesman Lt. Brian Smith said,” now here’s the kicker, “We hope that they can utilize events like this as a means to find the common ground and work together for the common goal.”  ???  I thought I would substitute the usual WTF that usually follows an incredulous statement like that with question marks.  I never pass up the ...

The New Cult

Past cult leaders the likes of Sun Myung Moon, David Koresh and Jim Jones, exemplary role models for “Moonies”, “Davidians” and “Peoples Templers” are said to have had a charismatic  gift of gab and were able to ensnarl a whole slew of followers into their realm.  They, of course, have since passed into the great beyond.  Moon was 92 when he died of pneumonia, Korish was 33 when he and his zealots died with guns blazing and Jones 47, died with his lemmings from a bad dose of kool-aid.  There was a rumor going around that his last words were, “Hey, did someone spike this stuff!”   Like Stalin, Hitler and Atilla the Hun, these folks had the innate ability to sway the masses.  To this day, I still can’t figure out how.  I was more enamored with garden slugs than those “coots.”  Nowadays, we have a new malady in our midst, an anomaly if you will, who not only doesn’t have a gift of gab, but cannot even enunciate words correctly, uses alternative facts...
